The hype for Southampton’s Graduation Ball 2014 is already building where a new priority ticket system is being launched by SUSU.

grad-ball

Grad Ball this year will be held at everyone’s favourite mega-club, Oceana following the trends of the last two years. Final year students, keep your diaries free on Monday 9th June for the big event.

SUSU have launched a Priority Sign up, available for three days only from Monday 27th January. Tickets will be priced at £49. A split payment option is available for those of you who’ve already blown your January loan drowning your post-exam sorrows in cheap vodka.

Currently, no acts have been announced but SUSU say those who sign up to the priority scheme will get a first look.

As always, we’ll be bringing you the first news of confirmed acts and anything else on the rumour mill.

£49 to go to oceana? great. everyone’s complained about it being held there for the last two years! I don’t understand why susu don’t actually listen to what the students want, they’re just in their own little social bubble. sure, maybe oceana might be more convenient, but personally i feel if it was held on campus it would lower these extortionate ticket prices and would be more personal to finishing graduates.

its the same reason why the SUSU friday nights failed, the union refuse to do anything different and to actually listen to students opinions because they’re all too busy tailoring the events for their own little clique

Couldn’t agree more. I went to a susu event earlier in the year – the ‘speakeasy’. The whole event had been poorly advertised and hardly anyone knew it was happening. when we got there the whole thing was just full of the susu crowd – I think they just use the university funding to organise their own little events for their own entertainment, and don’t advertise for a reason. they seem to like keeping this bubble, and don’t get me started on stupid susu politics! they just bully each other – who gives a shit whether you write for the Wessex scene or the soton tab?! the rest of the university doesn’t! they all need to grow up, do their jobs, and actually start listening to the student voice.

Actually, The Speakeasy was organised entirely independently to SUSU hence why it was an absolute nightmare to advertise properly. I should know, my friend and I were responsible for it.

Also, I work with SUSU marketing and the folks there work their arses off to arrange these events for students. If you’re all so irate about it, why not join the ‘Ideas and Discussion’ Group on Facebook – – or actually talk to those concerned rather than posting anonymous comments?

Lol the speakeasy was full of “SUSU crowd” (a fictitious, amorphous bubble of identical automatons who totally don’t have personalities or lives or varying degrees of interest in media etc) because they were told about it and it sounded like a fun night. Had nothing to do with organising it at all.

anyone who works for SUSU marketing should really be looking for other options because it is quite frankly dire

“Speakeasy” as a name for an open mic event was used by the poetry society last year, and SUSU have taken it. We now cannot hold these events, which used to attract poets and musicians from the local area, not just students. God damnit SUSU!

What an absolute crock of shit. The Speakeasy happened once and was not organised by SUSU.

They all seem so pleased with themselves flouncing around like royalty but getting very little done! I for one would like to see more accountability|!

If it’s anything like last year, £49 will buy you:

    – an Oceana night out I’d justify paying a fiver for
    – a whole range of acts that realistically only a few acts will be appealing to any one person
    – a headline act who didn’t turn up
    – absolutely no drinks deals. For £50 I’d expect some cheap drinks, but last year it was £6+ for a double. £4+ for a pint, with no offers
    – no food (except for paid for fairground stuff)
    – and a mediocre atmosphere as everyone is busy grumbling about all the above…

Don’t get me wrong, I’m on the side that was happy to hear the venue was Oceana again last year, I was actually working at the 2012 Grad Ball in Oceana and that was pretty good in comparison – it had drink deals, awesome acts and a good atmosphere. Last year it got worse, and SUSU needs to sort this out… and £49 is definitely too expensive for an event with no discounted drinks.

oorrr we could hire a hella loada boats for boat parties during the day with £5 bottles of wine to buy on board (just like the societies boat parties) . roll back through for a alternative gradball at the “warehouse” in the night with a half decent act.

    Let’s make it happen

I suppose if the general concensus is that it is overpriced, then fewer people will go, and susu will do more to work out what students want next year, and how much they are prepared to pay for it. Personally, I would rather go to Jesters than the grad ball. If I wanted to dress up I wouldn’t do it for a night out drinking, I would go for a meal instead.

To play devil’s advocate, I do remember something about a group people could join/apply to join to help organise the grad ball, perhaps if people feel really hard done by they could have done more to have an impact on it in the first place….
