Here at The Soton Tab we know that students love gossip, scandal and rumour, and the SUSU election season always has plenty of that. As for this year, who knows? With nominations opening TODAY and closing a week on Monday, we will have to wait and see what candidates our (‘your’) Union can produce, but as in previous years we’ve done some sniffing around and made the most of our journo tekkers to kick start the rumour mill. Union President: The top dog of the Union, Chairman of the board of trustees and ultimate BNOC.

  • Marcus Burton (Trustee)
  • Henry Pearson (NOC Site officer)
  • David Mendoza-Wolfson (VP Education)
  • Joe Hart (Performing Arts Web & Promotions Officer)
  • Ben Hansen-Hicks

VP Education: The Sabb who sorts out your lecturers if they step out of line.

  • Sophia D’Angelico (Modern Languages Academic President)
  • Shaun Coston
  • David Heard (Trustee)

VP Democracy & Creative Industries: SUSU’s very own Rupert Murdoch, in charge of everything to do with media: from censoring controlling the Wessex Scene and running Union Films, to enforcing democracy.

  • Megan Downing (Editor of the Edge magazine)
  • Anjit Aulakh (SUSU TV head of technical)
  • Jon North (Light Opera Soc Chairman)
  • Katy O’Brien (Union Council Chair, Soton Tab Entertainment editor)
  • Jed Marshall (Comedy Soc President)

VP Sports Development: Formerly known as AU President, this Sabb is the one all the AU teams beg for money.

  • Lucy Dowdall (AU Officer)
  • Adam Proudley (Sports Participation Officer)
  • Katie Lightowler (Union Councillor and Sports Development Zone rep)

VP Engagement: Head of most SUSU volunteering, RAG, and community action.

  • Ross Nation (RAG Committee Student Group Liaison Officer)
  • Jamie Hemingway (Student groups officer, Soton Tab Lifestyle editor)

VP Student Communities: Responsible for different student communities like postgrads and internationals, as well as JCRs and different sites.

  • Oli Coles (re-running)

VP Welfare: Hands out condoms and housing advice.

  • Beckie Thomas (re-running)
  • Josh Cox (Wellbeing officer, ran last year)
  • Gabriela Discenza (Union Councillor)
  • Tom Gleeson (Equality & Diversity officer)
  • Emma White (ex-Feminist Society President)

This list is not exhaustive and is only based on rumour. As always, right of reply is offered. Do you know of anyone running? Let us know in the comments!

I can’t wait to vote for RON, he won’t give shitty false promises… #24library. David Mendoza Wolfson, cheers for that! I love being able to go to the library at 3am in the morning.. oh wait.

I’m pretty sure you based your whole proposal on that aswell? You win my sabbatical failure of the year award.

Supposedly they have secured the funding agreed to do it, they just need the staff and an actual plan in place…

    That’s just for a test.

Big deal. Last time the library ran a test no-one used it and so they didn’t go ahead. It’ll be exactly the same again this time.

if you had any sense/time management skills at all you wouldn’t need the library at 3am… the only places you should be at that time is either bed or jesters

Presidential race is a massive sausage fest, but we’ll probably end up with 4 lady sabbs…
I reckon Marcus, Sophia, Megan (maybe Katy?), Lucy, Jamie, Oli and Beckie to win #predictions #controversial

Couldn’t agree more, so much much man.

I think it would be tragic if no women run, although highlights so strongly why supporting women in leadership was absolutely the right focus to have been mandated by AMY, lots more work to do.

Its also funny how lots of the president candidates are the ones vocally against measures to tackle the under representation of women in the unions leadership.

sometimes youve just gotta do it yourself, the best way to get medic students properly represented is to get medics in the Sab Office

unfortunately its pretty difficult (and not that advisable) to take a year off medicine – we can also currently make a much bigger difference to medics lives being on our own union committee (medsoc).. unfortunately its not paid and you don’t get a year off for it though!

Surely it would depend on the year. Lot. of medocs do an intercollating year (apologies if spelt wrong) which us nomedicine related. I’d see the experience as similar to that. The Dean and associate Dean have a good relationship with the Union so I could see them being supportive of anyone keen.

Medics do fantastic work, bit a media as say union president would do a lot for better understanding.
