As part of our quest to find the best Indian restaurant in Portswood, Soton Tab had a sneak peak into life at Gandhi and we weren’t too disappointed with what we found.

three stars

With enormous Onion Bhajis, an extensive menu and slightly above average dishes, Gandhi provided a reasonably enjoyable evening. The friendly staff were happy to bring out a cake we had brought earlier for a customer’s 21st birthday and even gave us a round of free baileys. Unfortunately, the attentiveness stops there.

In the middle of Portswood opposite Costa Coffee, the restaurant is placed in an ideal location on Portswood Road. The interior is fresh and clean with a fancy bar and even the toilets were sparkling.

After forgetting various members of the table several times while taking our orders, the staff then repeatedly failed to bring over glasses of water. More than one customer at our table waited well over half an hour for water despite asking two members of staff and receiving alcoholic drinks ordered after the water. This was not a huge problem but on a weekday evening with only a quarter of the restaurant full, this seemed a bit ridiculous.

Third year Geology student told Soton Tab about his experience. He summed it up in two words:

Not amazing

This student ate Chicken Madras with pilal rice and onion bhajis, claiming it was not the best they had tasted.

For a mere £12.90 you could eat the Chef’s signature dish, a mixture of Chicken Tikka, Lamb Tikka and King Prawn. Third year Zoology student told Soton Tab this dish was amazing and she would highly recommend it.

Aside from the illegible bill which made our orders impossible to decipher, the restaurant also charged us double for our poppadum. Despite being 60p on the menu the bill claims £9.60 for eight. Not sure that adds up quite right.

The drinks and dishes were reasonably priced coming in at around £17 a head for a main meal, rice and more than one alcoholic beverage.

Their takeaway was nothing spectacular. The Chicken Balti came with a strange variety of vegetables as if they had been thrown in.

With mixed reviews of the food and inconsistent service, do not eat there expecting the best Indian restaurant you’ve ever experienced.

Its fairly standard for indians to charge extra for the pickles, the menu states its 60p per person for a popadum and 60p per person for the “selection from the pickle tray” so they haven’t mischarged you.

I’ve only been once and had a takeaway once, but my experiences were a lot better than yours. I’d definitely recommend it.
