A pair of students from the University of Southampton appeared on the BBC’s hit TV show Pointless, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

The show first aired in 2009, and due to its popularity has continued for twelve more seasons. Contestants compete to find the most obscure answers to general knowledge questions, the aim being to score as few points as possible.

Fareed Anees, second year law student, and Danny McNamee, a second year MORSE student, filmed the show over a year before it was eventually aired.

Some viewers took to Twitter to express their admiration for the pair as they cruised through the early rounds, even getting the chance to partake in hosts Richard Osman and Alexander Armstrong’s legendary PG-rated banter.

The pair actually filed out their application after a few drinks and decided to send the application off anyway. Fareed told us:

I went on my laptop and started filling it out, making it a little bit more flippant than I would’ve sober.

We then decided to keep the humour and the producers really liked our application and called us for interview.

The pair also seem a natural replacement for Alexander and Richard, the hosts of the show, if they should ever move on.

Danny described it as:

Just a fun day out. It was mid-May so it was a pretty good revision break.

I got a profile picture out of it and it made my mum happy, too

Fareed even managed to snag a pointless answer (one which none of the BBC’s focus group of 100 people could think of). This added £250 to the jackpot and precious praise from Richard.

The pair reached the ‘Head to head’ round of the show, with the winner going through to the final round and a chance to win the jackpot. However, they lost to their rivals after scoring highly on a round of questions on nursery rhymes.

Despite their inadvertent admission that their childhood was sub-par, the pair have a chance to rectify their mistakes on Monday.
