Looking for a new way to celebrate the weekend? Fancy a change of scenery from The Stags or Wild Lime? Then you’re in luck! We spoke to Lewis from The Social, a bar opening up in Bedford Place very soon.
So what is the concept behind The Social and what makes it different from other bars in Southampton at the moment?
We are what’s called a dive bar, something that’s very big in the States and moving into London currently. It effectively means it’ll be a bar that is informal and relaxed. Somewhere people can come, enjoy a good drink, some good food and chill out, not something you can do in Southampton in many places!
What’s the menu looking like?
Apart from drinks, we are also going to be selling a selection of different pies, with all the sides you could want!
Will the prices be student friendly?
Although we are going to be a premium bar in the city we will always do our bit for the students! As a recent graduate I know how stressful being a student can be so I’ll be doing my best to make sure we are looking after them.
When’s the launch event?
The launch party, we will be keeping that a secret! It’s coming very soon though and it will be huge, so of course we want everyone to be able to come and check us out.
What’s your favourite drink?
Mine personally? I’ll take a cold beer and a whiskey. Maybe a tequila.
We can’t wait for The Social to open. If you’d like to find out more or keep up to date with the latest on the launch event, like the , follow them on Twitter or check out their Instagram .
“Somewhere people can come, enjoy a good drink, some good food and chill out, not something you can do in Southampton in many places!” [citation needed]
Calling a place a dive is clever marketing: “Yes, we’re a shithole, but we’re doing it on purpose”.

“A ghettofied hole in the wall bar where the poor and downtrodden alcoholics of america go to drink disounted mini-pitchers and listen to tired David alan Coe songs.”
Formal definition vs how the word is actually used.

And to think, some businesses pay through the nose for a full page advert.
