Over 1,000 of you said Jesters is your favourite nightclub in Southampton.

Last week we published a poll asking you to vote for your favourite nightclub in the city and you voted in your thousands.

The nominees were: Jesters, Sobar, Oceana, Cafe Parfait, Switch, The Edge, Orange Rooms, Junk and PopWorld.

Jesters was the clear winner with 1,336 votes, 29% of the vote.

Grabbing the final place on the podium with 634 votes, 14% of the vote, was Oceana.

Trailing at the bottom in eighth place with 201 votes is Orange Rooms.

Last place goes to The Edge with under 200 votes.

Nightclub poll 2So what is it that makes us love Jesters so much?

One word: JESTICLES

Cheap drinks, safe atmosphere (due to the entirely student clientele), great music. It’s like a great house party with a paid bar.

Fresher, Thomas Randall, said:

I like it because it’s unpretentious. You get exactly what you pay for and it doesn’t pretend to be anything other than a fucked up house party that runs every night. A lot of clubs in Southampton try and fail to be more upmarket.

Patrick Donnelly, a final year Geography student said:

I like it because it’s only venue in Soton where you can get smothered by a heaving crowd of hot sweaty men and get piss all over you for a fiver. Some places in London charge in the hundreds for that sort of thing.

jesters win at life

We spoke to Nick, the manager of Jesters, to ask how he feels about the win:

We are thrilled with coming first and also a little surprised at some of the other results. Oceana and Junk above Sobar, what’s that all about?

We would like to offer a free drink to everybody who voted for us in clowns this Friday before 9pm. We really appreciate the support and loyalty we get from all our customers. They make it what it is and for better or worse, there really is nowhere else quite like it.

Do you agree with the results? Well, it doesn’t matter because we agreed the results were definitive.

In answer to the Jesters owners (admittedly rhetorical) question – Sobar came so far down because its client base overlaps a lot with Jesters. I’d bet a lot of the people who voted Jesters here would vote Sobar in a poll for “Southampton’s 2nd best nightclub,” but even if it is generally regarded as the second best club in Southampton that won’t necessarily be reflected in a poll where you can only vote for your absolute favourite.

Left wing nut job. It came so low down because it is a shitole compared to Jests. No atmosphere, no substance, not memorable. Nothing to do with your first past the post bullshit

Being a ‘shitole’ compared to the winner doesn’t necessarily mean it couldn’t be generally regarded as the second best. The survey established that more respondents consider Jesters to be the absolute best nightclub in Southampton than considered Sobar to be the absolute best nightclub in Southampton. (However, given that Jesters had less than 50% of the vote, we don’t have enough evidence to be certain that most people prefer Jesters to Sobar.)

I’m not trying to make any political points, I’m just pointing out that you can’t really draw conclusions about people’s 2nd, 3rd, …, nth favorite club based on poll which only asked about their first favorite. You can only say that fewer people have Sobar as their absolute favorite place, which I don’t think is surprising seeing as it’s essentially Jester’s little brother/sister/whatever-the-correct sibling-term-for-a-building-is.

I’m a maths nerd, not a politics nerd.
