Southampton Rowing Club are in with the chance of winning £5K in extra funding if they manage to get enough followers on Spotify.
The club is in desperate need of the funding, having recently lost one of our rowers to Newcastle due to better facilities and equipment.
With each blade costing almost £400, they money is tight for the club. Martin Williams, Novice Men’s Captain, told us:
As a boat club we have been punching above our weight in comparison to other boat clubs with a lot more funding than us. We don’t even have a coach for the senior men’s squad!
This money will help us to try and even compete with the best universities, which is where we should be aiming for which the talent we have.
The club is particularly keen to replace the Novice men’s boat. Natalie Armstrong, Women’s Captain, said:
The Novice Men’s 8+’s was effectively bought quite a few years ago with 50p and a pint and has probably reached the end of its days!
They need as many followers as possible before 27 March to win. Oxford Brookes won last year.
President of the Club, Roman Martin, added:
We have lots of people interested in rowing but it’s hard to get everyone out on the water when our boats are broken. All the squads are sharing boats which isn’t ideal!
