SUSU have announced two new part-time positions for the upcoming spring elections.

The new roles include Housing Officer, which according to SUSU’s website will “work with the VP Welfare on housing campaigns”, “represent students’ views on housing locally” and “represent student issues regarding housing”. This follows on from SUSU’s ‘Don’t Rush’ campaign against pushy letting agencies.

VP Welfare Beckie Thomas said:

The Housing Officer Role has been created to ensure that there is a student led drive each year to improve the housing experience for students.

Every Vice President Welfare will not necessarily prioritise campaigning on housing, so this student leader will be able to work with the sabbatical officer and relevant staff and student volunteers to represent student views to letting agencies, and to promote the housing advice to the student body.

Also being introduced is Charities and Community Officer, which will “support and develop student-led community volunteering projects” and “represent the interests of the charity and community Student Groups”.

The election cycle begins shortly, with nominations opening on 12th January.

If these are voluntary positions, then they both sound like a good idea. Housing can be a real issue here, would have been very beneficial to have had something like this many years ago. Students get palmed off with some incredibly bad properties without really knowing their legal rights.

Wooo hooo more elections! More positions! ! Metaphorically drowning in democracy over here!

All we need now is ANOTHER Awards ceremony!!! Honourable mention to the dullard who lost the cross campus Housing Officer election to a door knob from Glen Eyre

“Every Vice President Welfare will not necessarily prioritise campaigning on housing” yeah because why should the person in charge of student welfare focus on an issue that affects all of us instead of whichever whining minority group demanding special treatment is ‘in’ this year?

Because it looks better on a CV yeah?

“Charities and Community Officer, which will “support and develop student-led community volunteering projects” ”

Is that not the job of the VP Engagement?
