Southampton Vixens 2013/2014 Dance Squad have been awarded a partial bid to compete in Florida in a few weeks, and they need your help to get there.

As a result of their amazing achievements in 2014, including being crowned ICC ‘Grand Champions’, the team have the opportunity to represent the University of Southampton and England this April.

Through sponsors, fundraisers and even bake sales the squad have raised 17% of their £5000 target. If they do not reach at least 50% of this target they don’t get a single penny.

Donations help towards their flights, accommodation and travel while abroad on this once in a lifetime opportunity. Have a look at their fundraising page here.

Elayda Hearne, second year Chemistry student and Vixens Social Secretary, told us how she feels about this opportunity:

We worked really hard all last year towards nationals. We didn’t do as well as would have liked in our first two competitions but we kept working hard at it and eventually won nationals, which was the best feeling!

We were so excited when we got the bid to Daytona, as the opportunity is amazing and we’ve never done something like this before.

I can’t be the only one who thinks that paying £5000 between what must be over 10 of them to go to America isn’t unreasonable at all? Hell going to Salou costs £300 each for 4 days plus a combined 2 days on a coach. I’m all for donating to good causes, this isn’t one.

    Hi there,

First off, we really appreciate you taking the time to read about our squad and achievements, but we do feel that there have been some misunderstandings:

    a) The entire competition actually costs £13,200, if you do the math, we are only looking to raise less than half of the total cost, as we have not expected to just be completely ‘paid for’ – but to reassure you, you are, in fact, not alone in thinking that a mere £400 odd each for travel and accommodation to and from America isn’t unreasonable (we all wish you were right The Stag)!

    b) I can’t be the only one who thinks that it’s a little far fetched to compare an International Championship in America (the leaders in cheer and dance) which you cannot just ‘sign up for’ and have a banterous name on the back of a hoodie to attend. We had to win Nationals last year and have scored high enough to receive ‘a bid’ (which is an invitation from the national competition) to go and compete abroad – this is an athletic opportunity, not a holiday as people seem to so easily coin it. We understand that Florida is a common holiday destination but people can go with alternative purposes – ours is to compete in a worldwide competition: whilst were out there we have training scheduled by the International Cheer Coalition and the National Cheer and Dance Alliance in the week leading up to our two day competition.

    c) It is disheartening to hear of the lack of support from fellow University students. We are proud to share the positive news about other sports teams with our family and friends as it reflects our University’s athletic standards. This is why we want to bring our University’s name to America, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many UK university teams, first one at Southampton. We do not and have not wished to have upset anyone at the University by being excited about our achievements and looking to bring in more success for Team Southampton.

    d) Unfortunately, as the Vixens club itself has many commitments to national competitions each year and have allocated spending, us 12 girls who won Nationals last year have to fund this ourselves – as University students, I’m sure you can relate to not having a spare £1,100 lying around yet wanting to take on all the opportunities that you do come by through months and years of training and competing.

Basically, we apologize for any misunderstanding that there has been, but hope that this clears some things up. If not, feel free to ask kindly – we’re more than happy to enlighten people about what we do.

Enjoy Tour though, wish we could’ve gone!
